We’ve partnered with actress, activist and budding thought leader Yara Shahidi on our Fossil Firsts campaign. When we spoke with Yara, she was over the moon to tell us about stories of “firsts” shared with her First Fossil as well as her new Fossil Q Venture smartwatch .

First Fossil?

"The Fossil Q Wander- which was a gift! Anyone who knows me also knows that I love watches-especially pocket watches. My Grandfather gave me my first pocket watch and it is one of my most treasured keepsakes."

First job?

"My first job was actually a print job. I was six weeks old, and my mom was a commercial actress. When I was born she sent over a polaroid to her agent."

First BFF?

"My best friend Aires, she’s really my first best friend and current best friend, so we’ve had some pretty great memories."

What function of your smartwatch makes your life more efficient?

"I really love how much you can personalize this watch! I can customize the dials and customize the apps that I want on my watch face, which is really amazing. That way I don’t have to change out my watch to complement whatever outfit I’m wearing-day or night. Also, I can filter out information and stay connected with loved ones—which is really important to me especially when I’m working. My time becomes limited, and I definitely don’t want to miss a call or text from them!"

How do you want to inspire the next generation of your fans?

"I want to inspire them to be involved. I know that a lot of us have great ideas for the change we want to see, but aren’t always sure how to voice that change and see it turn into action. I want to continue giving a platform to the excitement and education my supporters, and I share about meaningful ways we can make a difference. I am focused on changing peoples' preconceived notions about what young, confident people are able to positively achieve when we are united!"

Q: Who’s the first person you call when you’re scared?

A: My mother. My mother and father are the only people on my favorites list right now.

Q: What's your family like?

A: My family is made up of educators, creators, artists, actors, musicians, astronauts. I guess you can say I’ve always been surrounded by people with ambition.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A: One, a college graduate for sure after majoring in sociology and African American studies. I really love public speaking, so my goal is to continue down the path of thought leadership. I describe my future job as both politics adjacent and a professional activist.

Q: How do you step away from your phone?

A: A phone is something that does get into the way of interaction. I mean it’s something intentional I have to do by making sure I’m in the moment as much as possible. It’s a constant activity and reminder in my head to make sure I’m here and not operating in the future or the past.

Q: What’re your three favorite emojis?

A: The blue swirl is one; I just feel a little wavy sometimes. The side smile, that’s me. Of course, my favorite is the cheesing face.
