PAPER MACHE DIY WITH BRITTNI OF PAPER & STITCH

February 23, 2017

Brittni Mehlhoff of Paper & Stitch is throwing us back to our crafting days with an oh-so cute (and ready to use) paper maché project inspired by our Spring 2017 collection. Grab your crafting tools and do it yourself!

Here's how to make your own set of DIY jewelry dishes made entirely of newspaper.

Materials

  • newspaper
  • balloons
  • foam brush
  • paint brush
  • matte finish Mod Podge
  • scissors
  • acrylic paint
  • cup or small bowl (to rest balloon on while drying)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Start by ripping newspaper into small(ish) strips - 1/2 inch wide by 1-3 inches long. They don't all have to be the same size. Just err on the side or smaller as opposed to larger pieces because small pieces are easier to smooth down.

2. Next, blow up small balloons to about half their size.

3. Hold the balloon in your hand and using a foam brush, brush a thick(ish) layer of Mod Podge onto the balloon, as shown.

4. Start adding strips of newspaper to the balloon. With each piece of newspaper added, add a thin coat of Mod Podge on top, before adding another piece. Repeat this process until the top 1/3 of the balloon is covered. Wait for that first layer to dry to the touch. You can set the balloon on top of a small bowl to keep it from rolling, while waiting for it to dry.

5. Add additional layers (4-5 layers total is a good amount - the more layers you add, the stronger and thicker your piece will be). Set aside overnight until fully dry.

6.
Once dry, pop the balloon with a pair of scissors and carefully remove it from the paper mache dish.

7. Cut around the edge of the bowl, with scissors, to create a smoother more uniform look.

8. Using a paint-and-primer in one or quality acrylic paint, paint the inside and outside of each dish. Set aside to dry before using.

Brittni kept some of the dishes solid colors and added stripes to others, but you can create any patterns you like.

Add your jewelry and accessories and never again lose your favorite pieces. Brittni's spring picks include the semi-precious bar bracelet, fringe earrings, our vintage-inspired sunglasses and the mini tab wallet.
